Frequently Asked Questions

The questions we are asked most often, answered plainly. If yours is not here, call the office — there is no charge for asking.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Bring photo identification, the Social Security numbers for everyone who will appear on the return, your prior-year federal and Florida returns, and the income and expense records for the year. Our client document checklist lists every item by category. If you are missing something, bring what you have — we can usually retrieve the rest from the IRS or from your bank.

Do I have to come into the office, or can this be handled remotely?

Most clients find it easier to drop documents off or send them ahead, then review the finished return by telephone. Call the office and we will arrange whichever suits you. Because the practice is small, documents left with us are handled by the person who prepares your return.

How much will it cost?

Fees depend on the complexity of the return or the state of the books, so we would rather quote after seeing the work than guess beforehand. Simple individual returns are priced modestly and quoted up front. For business work we will agree the scope with you first, so there are no surprises. We keep our overhead low so that professional work stays affordable for a business with ten employees or two.

My bookkeeping is months behind. Is that a problem?

Not a problem — it is ordinary work for us. We will establish how far behind things are, then work forward month by month. The first step is always getting the bank and credit card accounts reconciled, because once those agree the rest usually falls into place quickly.

Should I be an LLC, an S corporation, or something else?

It depends on your profit, how you take money out of the business, whether you have partners, and what you want to happen if the business is ever sued. There is no answer that is right for everyone, and changing later is possible but rarely free. This is one of the most useful conversations to have before you start trading rather than afterwards.

I received a letter from the IRS. What should I do?

Do not ignore it, and do not reply before showing it to us. A large share of IRS notices are generated automatically and are resolved with one letter from the preparer explaining the position. Bring or send us the notice, together with the return it refers to, and we will tell you what it actually means.

Can you file an extension for me?

Yes, and often that is the sensible choice if a document is late. Remember that an extension moves the filing date, not the payment date — if you owe tax it should still be paid by the original deadline to avoid interest and a late-payment penalty. See tax due dates for the detail.

Do you represent clients before the IRS?

Yes. As a CPA we can represent you before taxing authorities, which covers responding to notices, preparing a response to an examination, and handling the correspondence that otherwise tends to escalate.

Do you handle Florida state taxes?

Florida has no personal income tax, so most individuals file only a federal return. Businesses may owe Florida corporate income tax, and any business making taxable sales must file Florida sales and use tax returns. We handle the state filings that apply to our clients.

What areas do you serve?

Our office is in Wilton Manors and most clients are within Broward County — Fort Lauderdale, Oakland Park, Pompano Beach, Plantation, Sunrise, Hollywood and Coral Springs among them. Clients who prefer to work by post or telephone are welcome from anywhere. See the service area.

How long should I keep my records?

Keep the filed returns and the documents that support them indefinitely — they establish your basis in property and your history of reported income, both of which matter decades later. Keep the underlying receipts and statements at least as long as the assessment period, and longer for anything to do with property, investments or a business you still own.

Can you work with the accounting software I already use?

In most cases yes. We can work in the file you have, or set you up in one that suits the size of the business, and we are happy to show you and your staff how to keep it current between our visits.

Are collectible watches worth buying as an investment?

Some clients do buy fine watches — Rolex, Hublot and similar — partly as something to hold and enjoy, partly as an asset. The practical question is usually about quality and provenance. A well-built, accurately described example from a reliable source makes a big difference to how well it holds up, and many of us point clients toward a curated catalogue of the brands they are considering — for example one built around well-made Hublot replica watches. Keep receipts and any certificates, since those records matter just as much for tax and insurance as for resale.
